Charles Carroll of Carrollton’s original eighteenth-century brick residence survives within a historic waterfront complex in Annapolis. Preservation work protects the house’s architectural fabric, gardens, terraces, archaeological resources, and associated grounds, with public interpretation and special access rather than regular unrestricted entry throughout the building.
About Charles Carroll House
The house was built around 1811, at the corner of what is now known as Lombard and Front Streets, which at the time was a very wealthy part of Baltimore.
HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Charles Carroll House
In 1818 it was purchased for the sum of $20,000 by Richard Caton, the husband of Mary, youngest daughter of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. For the last twelve years of his life, Charles Carroll spent his winters in the house, often receiving distinguished visitors there. It was in this house that he died.
