About Chappell Hill

Chappell Hill was founded in 1847 and named for Robert Chappell, who settled the area in 1841. The town became an early education center, home to Soule University, established in 1850, and the Chappell Hill Male and Female Institute, founded in 1852. During the Civil War its male students marched off to serve, and the town hosted a Confederate depot.
