The site preserves the Lion of Chaeronea, a monumental stone lion marking the mass grave of the Theban Sacred Band, along with the remains of an ancient theater cut into the hillside and scattered wall foundations of the acropolis. It falls under the protection of the Greek Ministry of Culture through its local archaeological ephorate. The monument and ruins stand in open ground and are freely accessible to visitors.
About Chaeronea
Chaeronea was an ancient Boeotian city, inhabited from early times and organized as a polis by the Greek archaic period. In 338 BCE it was the site of the battle in which Philip II of Macedon and Alexander defeated the allied forces of Athens and Thebes. The victory ended Greek city-state independence and established Macedonian hegemony.
