HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Château d'Ussé.

Château d'Ussé preserves its fifteenth and sixteenth-century towers, turrets, and chapel in the Renaissance style, along with furnished interiors and terraced gardens designed in the tradition of André Le Nôtre, though portions of the original medieval fortress were remodeled over later centuries. The chateau is privately owned by the de Blacas family and is a classified monument historique. It is open to the public on a ticketed, seasonal basis.

About Château d'Ussé

A fortress stood on this site above the Indre valley from the eleventh century, guarding the border between Anjou and Touraine. The present château was rebuilt in stages from the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries, blending medieval fortification with Renaissance and classical additions. Tradition holds it inspired Charles Perrault's Sleeping Beauty, though this cannot be documented.
