The castle retains its full circuit of ramparts, moat, and towers, along with the Renaissance era Grand Logis and Golden Crown Tower, giving a largely authentic though much restored medieval and Renaissance fortress. It is owned and operated by the City of Nantes, which houses the Nantes History Museum within its buildings, and the ensemble is a listed historic monument. The courtyards and ramparts walk are freely accessible, while the museum galleries require a paid ticket.
About Château des Ducs de Bretagne
The Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne was rebuilt in the late fifteenth century by Duke Francis II of Brittany and was the birthplace of his daughter, Anne of Brittany. After Brittany's union with France, it became a residence of French kings, and the Edict of Nantes was signed there in 1598. The castle later served as a barracks and prison.
