About Château de Vitré
Château de Vitré was built under the lords of Vitré beginning in the eleventh century as a triangular fortress guarding the frontier between Brittany and France. It was rebuilt and strengthened in stone during the following centuries by the same family and their successors. It played a key role in defending Breton independence and controlling trade routes into the duchy.
