HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Château de Villandry & Gardens.
Château de Villandry preserves its sixteenth century Renaissance structure and keep, largely original though restored, set within elaborate ornamental and kitchen gardens that were recreated in a Renaissance style during the early twentieth century rather than surviving from the original period. It remains privately owned by the Carvallo family. The château and gardens are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Château de Villandry & Gardens
The Château de Villandry was built in the 1530s by Jean Le Breton, a finance minister under King Francis I, as one of the last great Renaissance châteaux erected along the Loire. It replaced an earlier medieval fortress on the site. The estate became renowned for its elaborate formal gardens, including an ornamental kitchen garden.
