HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Château de Saumur.

The chateau preserves its medieval curtain walls and four corner towers with pepper-pot turrets and a machicolated parapet familiar from the Très Riches Heures illumination, along with restored Renaissance-era rooms, though much of the stonework reflects nineteenth and twentieth century restoration rather than original medieval fabric. It is owned by the town of Saumur and is classified as a historic monument. The chateau is open to the public on a ticketed basis and houses museum collections within its walls.

About Château de Saumur

The counts of Anjou built a fortress at Saumur in the tenth century to guard the Loire valley, later rebuilt in stone during the fourteenth century. It served as a residence for the House of Anjou and passed through royal and noble hands. Its turrets and towers were later depicted in the medieval illuminated manuscript Les Très Riches Heures.
