HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Château de Cognac.

The château preserves its medieval towers and Renaissance apartments, adapted since the nineteenth century to house the cellars and offices of the Otard cognac house, with some original decorative features such as carved fireplaces surviving inside. It is privately owned and operated by the Otard company. The building is open to the public by guided tour only, on a ticketed basis.

About Château de Cognac

The Château de Cognac originated as a fortress of the counts of Angoulême, possibly as early as the tenth century, guarding the Charente River. Rebuilt and expanded over the following centuries, it became a residence of the House of Valois-Angoulême. King Francis I of France was born there in 1494, tying the castle to French royal history.
