HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Certosa di San Martino.
The Certosa di San Martino preserves its baroque church with works by Neapolitan masters, the marble clad Chiostro Grande, and the Priore's apartments largely intact from its centuries as a Carthusian monastery. It is owned by the Italian state and operated by the Ministry of Culture as the Museo Nazionale di San Martino. The complex is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Certosa di San Martino
The Certosa di San Martino was founded in 1325 as a Carthusian monastery under Angevin rule above Naples. Cosimo Fanzago and other artists remodeled its church in an ornate Baroque style during the seventeenth century. As one of the wealthiest monastic houses in southern Italy, it held a central place in the kingdom's religious and artistic life.
