The former Carthusian monastery preserves its large and small cloisters, the monks' cells, the church, and monastic buildings dating mainly from the fourteenth century, now adapted to house museum galleries and exhibition spaces. It is owned by the Italian state and administered by the Ministry of Culture. The complex is open to the public, generally free of charge.
About Certosa di San Giacomo
Giacomo Arcucci, a court official under Queen Joanna I of Naples, founded this Carthusian monastery on Capri in 1371 as a retreat for monks following the order's contemplative rule. Pirate raids threatened the coastal community, prompting fortification of its walls. The charterhouse endured as a center of monastic life on the island until its suppression under Napoleonic rule.
