During the Battle of White Plains on October 28, 1776, the center of Washington's army occupied this vicinity. After withdrawing from Manhattan, Washington established a line across the hills around White Plains to prevent the British from trapping his force. British and German troops attacked the American position on Chatterton Hill and drove its defenders back, but they did not destroy the Continental Army. Washington remained near White Plains through October 31 before retreating north, preserving his army for continued resistance after the loss of New York City.
