George Washington's schooner grounded off Cedar Point in February 1766, and his diary later recorded fishing here in August 1768. These incidents belong to his management of Mount Vernon's Potomac economy before independence. Fishing, shipping, ferries, and river navigation connected the plantation to regional and Atlantic markets, while enslaved workers performed much of the labor supporting those activities.
