HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Cathedral of Jaén.

The cathedral's Renaissance facade, twin towers, chapter house, and Capilla Mayor survive as originally built, and it houses the relic known as the Santo Rostro. It is administered by the Diocese of Jaén as a functioning cathedral of the Catholic Church. It remains an active place of worship and is open to visitors, with towers and museum areas accessible on a ticketed basis.

About Cathedral of Jaén

Christian authorities began construction of Jaén's cathedral in the sixteenth century on the site of a former mosque, following the Reconquista from Muslim rule. Architect Andrés de Vandelvira directed the Renaissance design, work that continued over more than two centuries. The cathedral became the seat of the bishopric of Jaén and a center of religious life.
