HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa.

The catacombs survive as a multilevel rock-cut necropolis carved directly into bedrock, including a central shaft, a banquet hall, and burial chambers decorated with reliefs blending Egyptian and Greco-Roman styles. They are administered by Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities as a protected antiquities site. They are open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa

Alexandrian families carved the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa from bedrock in the second century CE as a communal burial complex. Cut on three descending levels around a central shaft, its tomb chambers blended Egyptian funerary imagery with Greek and Roman decoration. The site served burial needs for several centuries, reflecting Alexandria's mixed culture.
