HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Castelsardo.

The medieval Castello dei Doria overlooking the town survives structurally intact, its stone walls and towers now housing a museum of Mediterranean basketry and weaving, while the surrounding old town retains its dense medieval street plan and stone houses. The castle and museum are administered by the municipality of Castelsardo. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis, while the old town streets are freely accessible.

About Castelsardo

Castelsardo was founded in 1102 by the Genoese Doria family as Castel Genovese, a fortified hilltop stronghold on Sardinia's northern coast. It passed to Aragonese control in the fifteenth century, when it was renamed Castel Aragonese, before becoming part of the unified Kingdom of Sardinia. The fortress town controlled maritime trade and defense along this stretch of coast for centuries.
