HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Castello Svevo.

The castle preserves its massive Norman-Swabian keep and corner towers along with sections of the surrounding curtain walls and moat, much of the structure having been rebuilt and altered under later Angevin and Aragonese rule. It is owned by the Italian state and administered by the regional cultural heritage authority as a museum and monument. The castle is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Castello Svevo

A fortress guarded this Adriatic port city from the early medieval period, and the Normans rebuilt it as a stone castle after conquering Bari in the eleventh century. Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen reconstructed it in the thirteenth century as a royal residence and stronghold. It anchored Swabian control over the Apulian coast.
