HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Castello di Miramare.

Miramare Castle survives intact as built in the mid-nineteenth century for Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, including its furnished historic apartments, and is set within an extensive landscaped park containing a smaller castelletto and formal gardens. It is owned by the Italian state and administered by the Ministry of Culture as a national museum. The castle and grounds are open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Castello di Miramare

Castello di Miramare was built between 1856 and 1860 as a seaside residence for Archduke Maximilian of Austria and his wife Charlotte of Belgium. Maximilian departed from there in 1864 to become Emperor of Mexico, a venture that ended with his execution in 1867. The castle remained a monument to his ambitions and to Habsburg ties with the Adriatic.
