The castle preserves its fortified walls, bastions, a cathedral, convent ruins, and towers built up over centuries on a rocky islet connected to Ischia by a causeway, with some structures in ruinous condition. It is in private ownership and operated as a historic site. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Castello Aragonese
The Castello Aragonese occupies a small islet off Ischia first fortified by the Greek tyrant Hiero I of Syracuse in the fifth century BCE. In the fifteenth century, Alfonso of Aragon rebuilt it as a fortress and connected it to the main island by a stone bridge. It later also housed a convent, sheltering islanders during pirate raids.
