HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Castel Roncolo (Runkelstein Castle).

The castle preserves its medieval stone keep, curtain walls, and towers, along with one of the largest surviving cycles of secular fresco painting from the Middle Ages, decorating several interior halls. It is owned and administered by the Municipality of Bolzano. The castle is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with access to the fresco rooms and courtyards.

About Castel Roncolo (Runkelstein Castle)

Castel Roncolo was built in 1237 by the lords of Bolzano as a fortified residence above the Adige valley. In the late fourteenth century, the Vintler merchant family enlarged it and commissioned an extensive fresco cycle depicting courtly romance and chivalric legend. The castle became renowned for one of the largest collections of secular medieval wall painting in the Alps.
