Built beginning in the early 1850s, Casa Navarro functioned as the home and working headquarters of Jose Antonio Navarro, a Tejano rancher, merchant, and statesman who was one of only two native-born Texans to sign the 1836 Texas Declaration of Independence. The property originally comprised several structures functioning together: a main limestone-and-adobe dwelling that served as the Navarro family residence, a separate stone building on the corner believed to have functioned as Navarro's law office or store space, and a detached kitchen building that may also have provided additional living quarters. Together these buildings supported Navarro's roles as family patriarch, businessman, and public figure until his death in 1871, making the site a working center of Tejano civic and commercial life in San Antonio during the mid-1800s. After passing out of the family's hands, the property faced demolition until the San Antonio Conservation Society rescued and restored it in 1960, initially operating it as a museum. Ownership transferred to the Texas Historical Commission in 2008. Today Casa Navarro functions as a state historic site and house museum, with restored buildings and period exhibits open to the public that interpret Navarro's domestic life, business activities, and legacy as a signer of Texas independence and a key Tejano historical figure.
