Carrowkeel preserves a group of Neolithic passage tombs and cairns of piled stone spread across the hilltops, several with their corbelled chambers still intact and accessible. The tombs lie in state care under the Office of Public Works. The site is freely accessible across open moorland, reached on foot rather than through any visitor facility.
About Carrowkeel Passage Tombs
The Carrowkeel passage tombs formed a Neolithic cemetery of cairns built around 3000 BCE on the Bricklieve Mountains in County Sligo. Local communities constructed the chambered mounds to house the remains of their dead, several aligned to capture sunlight at the summer solstice. The site was part of the wider concentration of passage tombs built across Neolithic Ireland.
