Tradition holds that Captain Angus Greme was among Lafayette's officers who admired this Maryland landscape during the Revolution and vowed to return. Greme later settled nearby with his family and was buried beside Trappe Church. Whatever details tradition has altered, the story reflects the enduring personal connections created by the Franco-American alliance. French officers traveled through unfamiliar communities, relied on local guides and hosts, and formed impressions of American land and society. Their service linked rural places to the international coalition that made victory at Yorktown possible.

One of two officers in Lafayette’s Army who, according to tradition, were so struck with the view from here that they vowed to return after the Revolution. Greme did settle nearby with his family and in 1850 he was buried beside Trappe Church, then a Chapel of Ease (established 1760) of St. George’s Episcopal Parish. Present stone building dates from 1875.
