Ancient Capsa survives chiefly as Roman-era stone pools, known as the piscines romaines, integrated into the modern town of Gafsa, along with a kasbah and scattered archaeological remains. The site is under the protection of Tunisia's Institut National du Patrimoine. The pools and surrounding old quarter are freely accessible to the public.
About Capsa (Gafsa), Tunisia
Capsa was a fortified Numidian stronghold in the interior of North Africa, described by the Roman historian Sallust as the treasury and refuge of King Jugurtha. The Roman general Gaius Marius captured and destroyed the town around 106 BCE during the Jugurthine War. It was later rebuilt as a Roman settlement known for its oasis and hot springs.
