HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Cappelle Medicee (Medici Chapels).

The complex preserves the Sagrestia Nuova, designed by Michelangelo with its Medici tomb sculptures, and the domed Cappella dei Principi with its inlaid marble and semiprecious stone decoration, both largely as built. It is part of the state museum system administered by Italy's Ministry of Culture. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Cappelle Medicee (Medici Chapels)

The Medici commissioned the New Sacristy at Florence's Basilica of San Lorenzo in the 1520s, designed by Michelangelo as a family mausoleum. Its tombs, including figures of Dawn, Dusk, Day, and Night, commemorated Medici dukes and expressed High Renaissance ideas of mortality. The chapel formed part of a program asserting Medici dynastic authority.
