HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Capo Colonna (Temple of Hera Lacinia), Crotone.
Only a single fluted Doric column survives upright from what was once a large temple to Hera Lacinia with some forty-eight columns, standing within an archaeological park that also preserves scattered foundation blocks and other remains, while a nearby museum displays finds excavated from the site. The area is protected by Italy's Ministry of Culture through its regional archaeological authorities. The park and museum are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Capo Colonna (Temple of Hera Lacinia), Crotone
Greek colonists from Croton built a sanctuary to Hera Lacinia on this promontory in the sixth century BCE, among the most important Doric temples in Magna Graecia. The precinct served as a major Panhellenic sanctuary and treasury, drawing pilgrims from across the Greek world. Ancient writers recorded its wealth, and tradition credited Hannibal with visiting the shrine.
