HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Capernaum & the Sea of Galilee holy sites.
The Capernaum site preserves excavated remains of a fifth century synagogue built of white limestone atop an earlier basalt synagogue foundation, along with the octagonal Byzantine era church remains traditionally identified as the house of Saint Peter, now sheltered beneath a modern elevated church structure. The site is managed by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, with nearby properties under the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The site is open to the public on a ticketed or donation basis as an active pilgrimage and archaeological site.

Capernaum was a Jewish fishing village on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, inhabited from at least the first century BCE through the Byzantine period. The Gospels describe it as the center of Jesus's Galilean ministry, home to a synagogue and the traditional house of the apostle Peter. Byzantines later built a church over the house of Peter.
