The Canal du Midi survives as a functioning seventeenth-century waterway retaining its original locks, aqueducts, bridges, and tunnels engineered under Pierre-Paul Riquet, though many historic plane trees once lining its banks have been felled due to disease and replaced with other species. It is managed by the French state waterways authority, Voies Navigables de France, and is inscribed as a World Heritage Site. The canal and its towpaths remain freely open to boat traffic, cyclists, and walkers.
About Canal du Midi
Engineer Pierre-Paul Riquet directed construction of the Canal du Midi between 1667 and 1681 under Louis XIV to link the Garonne River at Toulouse with the Mediterranean Sea. The canal used an innovative system of locks, aqueducts, and tunnels to cross the watershed near Naurouze. It opened a new trade route for goods, avoiding the voyage around Spain.
