About Camp Hearne, World War II Prisoner of War Camp
Camp Hearne was built by the United States Army in 1942 and 1943 as a prisoner of war camp holding German soldiers, many captured during the North African campaign. It housed thousands of prisoners under the Geneva Convention, who organized classes, theater, and craft workshops within the compound. It reflected the wartime internment system in Texas.
