HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Caltagirone.
The historic hill town preserves its Baroque urban fabric largely intact, most notably the monumental Santa Maria del Monte staircase of over one hundred ceramic-tiled steps, along with numerous Baroque churches and palazzi rebuilt after a seventeenth-century earthquake. It is protected by Sicilian regional heritage authorities and the municipality of Caltagirone, and forms part of the World Heritage Site for the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. The historic center is freely accessible as an open town.
About Caltagirone
Caltagirone originated as a Sicel hilltop settlement in inland Sicily, occupied since at least the early Bronze Age. It passed under Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Arab rule, its Arabic name qal'at-ghiran, or castle of jars, reflecting a long pottery tradition. The town became renowned for ceramics, a craft that Norman and later rulers continued to foster.
