The Callanish Standing Stones survive as an original Neolithic arrangement of stone rows and a circle surrounding a tall central monolith, with a small chambered cairn near its center, all in their ancient positions rather than reconstructed. The site is a scheduled monument in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. The stones stand in open moorland and are freely accessible to visitors at all times, with a nearby visitor center providing interpretation.
About Callanish Standing Stones
Neolithic communities on the Isle of Lewis erected the Callanish standing stones around the third millennium BCE, arranging them in a cross-shaped pattern around a central circle. The site served ceremonial and likely astronomical purposes over many centuries. A burial cairn was added within the circle during the Bronze Age, reflecting its continued ritual significance.
