HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park.
The park preserves several stone-lined ceremonial ball courts, or bateyes, bordered by upright monoliths, some carved with petroglyphs attributed to the indigenous Taíno people who once used the site for ritual and recreational games. It is a National Historic Landmark managed by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. The grounds are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park
The Taíno people built this ceremonial complex in the interior of Puerto Rico around the thirteenth century, laying out stone-lined plazas known as bateyes for ballgames and public rituals. Many of the boundary stones bear carved petroglyphs representing deities and ancestral figures. The site served as a major religious gathering place for Taíno communities.
