HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Céide Fields.

The site preserves an extensive Neolithic field system of low stone walls, along with associated house and megalithic tomb foundations, known chiefly through excavation trenches and largely buried beneath blanket bog rather than visible as standing remains. It is managed by the Office of Public Works as a national monument. A visitor center provides ticketed access to guided walks across the excavated portions of the site.

About Céide Fields

The Céide Fields in County Mayo were laid out by Neolithic farmers around 3700 BCE as a system of stone walls dividing land for grazing and crops. The community also built megalithic tombs nearby, reflecting settled farming life rather than nomadic herding. Buried later under blanket bog, the fields rank among the oldest planned field systems in the world.
