HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Byzantine and Christian Museum.

The museum occupies the neoclassical Villa Ilissia, built in the nineteenth century as a private mansion, and displays its collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, sculpture, textiles, and manuscripts within later purpose-built galleries added around the original house. It is managed by the Greek Ministry of Culture as a state museum. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Byzantine and Christian Museum

The Byzantine and Christian Museum was founded in Athens in 1914 to collect Byzantine and post-Byzantine art and artifacts from across Greece. It occupied the Villa Ilissia, a nineteenth century mansion built for the Duchesse de Plaisance, and amassed icons and church furnishings from early Christian times onward. It became a leading institution for the study of Byzantine art.
