British forces constructed major defenses on Butts Hill during their occupation of Aquidneck Island in 1777. American troops occupied the works in 1778, making the fort the principal position of John Sullivan’s army during the Battle of Rhode Island. The defenses helped cover the American withdrawal after the unsuccessful attempt to retake Newport.
