HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Bury St Edmunds Abbey, Suffolk.
The abbey survives mainly as ruined flint and stone walls, including portions of the west front later incorporated into private houses, along with the largely intact Norman Tower and Abbey Gate, while the abbey church itself was demolished following the Dissolution. The ruins and surrounding Abbey Gardens are in public ownership, maintained by the local borough council, and protected as a scheduled monument. The grounds are freely accessible as a public park, with the gate towers viewable from outside.
About Bury St Edmunds Abbey, Suffolk
Bury St Edmunds Abbey was a Benedictine monastery founded in the eleventh century around the shrine of King Edmund, killed by Danes in 869. It became one of medieval England's wealthiest and most important pilgrimage sites under royal and papal patronage. In 1214 barons reportedly swore there to demand the charter of liberties that became Magna Carta.
