HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Bunce Island.
The island preserves ruined stone fortification walls, gun emplacements, and the foundations of slave-trading factory buildings, with much of the original structure reduced to overgrown ruins. It is under the protection of Sierra Leone's national monuments authority. Access is limited and generally requires arranging a boat trip and guide, with no regular ticketed facilities on site.
About Bunce Island
Bunce Island was established as a British slave trading post on the Sierra Leone River in the late seventeenth century. Operated by English and Scottish merchants, its fort held enslaved Africans before they were shipped across the Atlantic, many to rice plantations in South Carolina and Georgia. It became a major slave trading station on the African coast.
