Browne's Hill Dolmen survives as a Neolithic portal tomb consisting of two tall portal stones and a backstone supporting a massive granite capstone counted among the heaviest in Europe, with no other structural elements remaining above ground. It is a national monument in the guardianship of Ireland's Office of Public Works. The dolmen stands in an open field and is freely accessible to visitors at all times.
About Browne's Hill Dolmen
Neolithic farming communities in Ireland built Browne's Hill Dolmen around the fourth millennium BCE as a portal tomb to hold the remains of the dead. Its capstone, one of the heaviest in Europe, was raised using timber and earthen ramps without metal tools. The monument reflected the communal ritual and burial practices of early farming society.
