On May 7, 1781, British troops led by Banastre Tarleton defeated North Carolina militia near Swift Creek and again at Fishing Creek. The actions occurred as Cornwallis moved through eastern North Carolina toward Virginia. Tarleton’s mobile force dispersed local resistance and helped protect the British army’s movement during the campaign that ultimately ended at Yorktown.

Tarleton’s legion combined cavalry and mounted infantry suited to rapid pursuit. Local militia could gather quickly but often lacked the training and cohesion to withstand such an attack in open country. The clashes at Swift Creek and Fishing Creek scattered resistance along Cornwallis’s route after he left Wilmington. They were small actions compared with Guilford Courthouse or Yorktown, but they protected British movement and discouraged immediate mobilization. The marker represents a moving campaign in which control of roads and crossings mattered as much as possession of towns.
