From July 17 to July 29, 1776, Maryland defenders opposed Lord Dunmore's flotilla near St. George Island and the Potomac mainland. Captain Rezin Beall led militia resisting British attempts to land, raid, and obtain supplies. Beall was wounded, British vessels were damaged, and Dunmore himself reportedly suffered a wound. The engagement came only days after independence was declared and demonstrated that Chesapeake communities had to defend long shorelines before the new nation possessed an effective navy.
