British Embarkation Marker Sandyhook is associated with June 29, 1778 and the history of Monmouth. British troops embarked at Sandy Hook in July 1778 after withdrawing from Philadelphia and fighting at Monmouth. Their departure completed the movement to New York and ended the main Philadelphia campaign. On July 5, 1778 armies under General Sir Henry Clinton passed this point to reach British ships, at anchor off Horseshoe Cove, which evacuated them to New York. This completed their withdrawal through Middletown from Freehold after the Battle of Monmouth seven days earlier.
