HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Bristol Castle Site / Royal Fort, Bristol.

Little of the medieval Bristol Castle survives above ground beyond fragmentary wall footings and some vaulted remains visible within Castle Park, while the adjoining Royal Fort area retains an eighteenth century house and traces of Civil War era earthworks. The park is maintained by Bristol City Council and the Royal Fort house by the University of Bristol. The grounds are freely and publicly accessible as a city park.

About Bristol Castle Site / Royal Fort, Bristol

Bristol Castle was founded shortly after the Norman Conquest in the late eleventh century as a motte-and-bailey fortress, later rebuilt in stone as one of England's largest royal castles. It served as a royal stronghold and prison. Parliament ordered its demolition after the English Civil War, and the Georgian Royal Fort House was later raised on part of the site.
