About Brier Creek Battlefield Site

Brier Creek’s battlefield lies near the meeting of Brier Creek and the Savannah River in eastern Georgia. The March 3, 1779 engagement ended in a British victory. The wooded river landscape and a commemorative memorial offer a starting point for understanding this episode of the war’s southern campaign.

Archaeological work has helped identify evidence of the fighting, while a memorial and marker provide interpretation. The mapped visitor point represents the memorial rather than the battlefield’s complete limits; wildlife-management rules and seasonal conditions govern access.

History happened here at Brier Creek Battlefield Site

On March 3, 1779, British and American forces fought in the landscape where Brier Creek approaches the Savannah River. The waterways were central to the setting, rather than merely a backdrop. The battle ended in a British victory during the struggle for control of Georgia and the southern frontier.

Today, the area combines battlefield commemoration with wildlife management. Investigations in 2013–2014 recovered archaeological evidence that contributed to understanding the action. Markers help visitors locate the story within the landscape, while physical evidence is needed to trace combat positions beyond a single memorial point.
