About Bonthe Historic Town
Bonthe developed on Sherbro Island as a trading settlement where Sherbro and Bullom communities met Portuguese and later British merchants from around the seventeenth century. The port handled trade in goods and, during earlier periods, enslaved people, before shifting toward palm oil and other produce. By the nineteenth century it had become a significant British colonial trading town.
