Bonaventure Cemetery preserves its nineteenth-century landscape of live oaks draped in Spanish moss alongside historic marble and granite monuments, statuary, and family mausoleums, though its best known sculpture, the Bird Girl, has since been relocated to a museum. The cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Savannah as a municipal burial ground. It remains an active cemetery and is freely accessible to the public.
About Bonaventure Cemetery
Bonaventure Cemetery was established in the mid-nineteenth century on the grounds of a former plantation overlooking the Wilmington River near Savannah. Laid out in the rural garden cemetery style fashionable at the time, it featured elaborate Victorian statuary and family plots shaded by live oaks. It became a well known burial ground and later gained fame through John Berendt's book.
