HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Bolama Historic Town.
The town retains a substantial stock of decaying Portuguese colonial era buildings, including the former governor's palace and administrative structures, many roofless or crumbling from decades of neglect and tropical climate. It remains in state ownership under Guinea-Bissau's government, without a formal international heritage designation, though it has been proposed for World Heritage status. The town is freely accessible, with much of it standing abandoned and open to view.
About Bolama Historic Town
Bolama was established in the eighteenth century as a coastal trading settlement on the West African coast, later contested between Portuguese and British interests. An 1870 international arbitration decided sovereignty in favor of Portugal, after which Bolama served as the capital of Portuguese Guinea. It functioned as the colony's administrative and commercial center until the capital later moved to Bissau.
