HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Bobo-Dioulasso Grand Mosque.

The mosque survives as a Sudano-Sahelian adobe structure with projecting timber stakes and rounded, buttressed walls, largely the product of periodic rebuilding and replastering rather than a single original fabric. It is maintained by the local Muslim community of Bobo-Dioulasso. It remains an active place of worship, with non-Muslim visitors generally permitted to view the exterior.

About Bobo-Dioulasso Grand Mosque

The Grand Mosque of Bobo-Dioulasso was built in the late nineteenth century by the city's Dioula Muslim merchant community in the Sudano-Sahelian mudbrick style. Its walls, reinforced with projecting wooden beams, followed building traditions shared across the West African Sahel. The mosque served as the principal center of Islamic worship and learning for Bobo-Dioulasso's trading community.
