George Washington used the Blanchard House as a headquarters on November 21, 1776, during the Continental retreat across New Jersey. British pressure had forced the Americans from Fort Lee and toward the Delaware River. The brief headquarters marks a difficult phase in which Washington preserved his shrinking army before counterattacking at Trenton.

After the fall of Fort Washington and evacuation of Fort Lee, Washington’s army moved south through New Jersey with enlistments expiring, men deserting, and British columns close behind.
