Blair Castle, at Blair Atholl in Perthshire, developed at a strategically important point on routes between central Scotland and the Highlands. Its history is closely associated with the earls and dukes of Atholl, but the building visible today combines work from many periods. The earliest part is traditionally dated to 1269 and known as Comyn's Tower. Later enlargement transformed that core repeatedly, producing a residence whose white walls and elaborate silhouette should not be mistaken for the intact appearance of a thirteenth century fortress.

Control of the surrounding routes made Blair important during periods of conflict, while the estate supplied the resources and relationships that sustained its owners. A noble household here combined local authority with participation in wider Scottish politics. The castle's rooms and service arrangements expanded as domestic expectations changed. Defence remained relevant at particular moments, but accommodation, ceremony and the management of property were continuing concerns. Its long architectural development reflects these overlapping purposes rather than a simple progression in which military needs suddenly disappeared and comfort took their place.

The Jacobite rising of 1745 and 1746 brought those tensions into sharp focus. Prince Charles Edward Stuart used Blair during the campaign, and government troops later occupied it. In March 1746, Jacobite forces under Lord George Murray besieged the garrison, but failed to secure its surrender before withdrawing. The action occurred shortly before the defeat at Culloden. It also revealed divisions within the Atholl family's political world, where kinship and estate connections did not guarantee that everyone supported the same side in the struggle over the monarchy.

During the eighteenth century, alterations gave Blair the character of a more fashionable country house. Nineteenth century work then added the towers and details associated with Scots Baronial taste, deliberately renewing the appearance of a Scottish castle. Queen Victoria's visit in 1844 formed part of the growing royal and aristocratic enthusiasm for the Highlands. The grounds, including designed gardens and tree planting, developed alongside the house. These landscapes expressed wealth and taste while depending on estate workers whose contribution was essential to their creation and maintenance.

Blair's interiors and collections preserve evidence of household life, military connections and changing decorative fashions, but their arrangement also reflects later collecting and presentation. The building is most revealing when its different phases are kept visible in the interpretation. A medieval tower, a Georgian residence and a Victorian castle image coexist within the same property. Blair therefore illustrates both the practical adaptation of an aristocratic seat and the deliberate construction of historical appearance, showing how later owners could celebrate the past while substantially reshaping the architecture through which that past was perceived.
