Visitor information final pass — reviewed October 3, 2026: Ticket Info now links to the Liberty Trail’s explicit Blackstocks-specific free-admission terms, which also list daily 9 am–6 pm opening. The trail page’s generic restroom icon conflicts with the previously checked on-site no-restroom operator information; retain NO and confirm before travel rather than transferring Musgrove Mill amenities. Group guided-hike charges and arrangements are separate from general entry.

Blackstocks Battlefield entry is free, daily 9 am–6 pm. Follow the designated gravel approach and walking trail. Ranger-led group hikes for 10 or more require advance booking and are listed at $10 per person. Do not apply Musgrove Mill’s general entrance fee or facilities to Blackstocks.

Peak visitation season unconfirmed. No reliable site-specific annual monthly attendance pattern was established.

April-May or October for the designated battlefield trail beyond midsummer heat. Check the park’s current access notice; arrange any guided group or off-trail visit separately.

About Blackstocks Battlefield

Blackstocks Battlefield preserves the setting of Thomas Sumter's victory over Banastre Tarleton in November 1780. Patriot militia used terrain and farm buildings to resist British attacks near the Tyger River. The action is an important example of local forces challenging British mobility in the southern campaign.

South Carolina protects the battlefield as an undeveloped historic landscape with a monument and trail interpretation. Its significance rests in the terrain and documented action, rather than a reconstructed farmstead. Original buildings should not be described as surviving without separate evidence confirming their fabric and location.

History happened here at Blackstocks Battlefield

On November 20, 1780, Sumter's militia occupied strong ground around Blackstock's farm. British infantry advanced against defenders sheltered by buildings, fences, and the ridge, while cavalry attacks failed to dislodge them. The terrain helped the Patriots resist Tarleton's force.

Sumter was seriously wounded, interrupting his leadership even though his men had won the encounter. The preserved river-and-ridge setting allows the battle's tactical importance to remain understandable. Modern stewardship and trail interpretation maintain that landscape while leaving the original farm structures to documentary and archaeological investigation.
